To us, the Harvest Hosts program is the Geocaching of RVing. We would have missed out on a pleasant stay and on some fresh vegetables, and Ben would have missed out on a client. It is unlikely that we would have made it to Ben’s farm on any other circumstances. Two new hosts were being added every day, so it’s no surprise that the host database is up to a whopping 1,450 locations now It doesn’t matter where you’re traveling to, chances are there will be a Harvest Hosts location near you. We woke up and watched some farm activities play out in front of us a tractor needs fixing. In January 2020, there were 1,040+ Harvest Hosts locations. It was the quietest night ever! Complete silence and one of the best night’s sleep we ever had. We had dinner outside and enjoyed the last rays of the sun bounce off the round bales before settling down for the billion stars night. There was a bounty of vegetables eggplants and tomatoes, kale and peppers, all lovingly tended to. These lovely flowering spikes famously line Prince Edward county’s roads.Īnd the squash flowers peeked through the giant leaves with promises of deliciousness. We walked over to explore some of the crops and were delighted to find hollyhocks. He grows organic vegetables and flowers on a few small garden plots that he is slowly expanding. We settled in one of the corners and went exploring.īen of Ben’s Blooms is a young farmer who just recently purchased this farm. We were greeted by Ben who directed us to an open field where we had our choice of parking for the night. Some of you may remember our stay at Rural Rootz, another fantastic host location. Whether it’s a visit to the museum, or in this case, we raided Ben’s roadside cart of organic vegetables. The stay is free, but the hosts get your business. If you have a self-contained RVers you can stay overnight. Our gratitude goes out to the Harvest Hosts program and participating members for offering these amazing opportunities to RVers.įollow along below for a pictorial of the wonderful places we stayed, interesting sights we found and activities we did during this first week of August.Īll nights this week were free stays with two nights at a Boondockers Welcome host site and five nights at four Harvest Hosts locations.We renewed our Harvest Host membership for this year, hoping to travel again. and were allotted peaceful, quiet overnight accommodations. In addition to the great education and history lessons, we feasted on delicious locally sourced produce, salsa, ice cream, wine, etc.
While staying at Harvest Hosts locations this week we had the opportunity to interact with several of the farm owners and learned much of the local history, how the farms, orchards, and wineries evolved and gained a great appreciation of the hard work that has gone into making the farms sustainable in the ever changing agricultural world. Since agriculture is a huge component of the rural areas and an interest of ours, we sought out opportunities to immerse ourselves the culture. When initially planning our trip to the eastern United States one goal we had in mind was to learn more about small town life of the local residents. The theme of the week revolved around Harvest Hosts locations at fruit orchards, working farms and local wineries. August 1-7, 2019 - During the first week of August we wrapped up our tour of New England by completing our time in Connecticut and making our way west to New York.
